Qld: Crews on stand-by for further flooding
BRISBANE, April 8 AAP - Flood warnings for the Townsville area in north Queensland
have been cancelled, but the threat of more rain is keeping emergency services on alert.
A Queensland Weather Bureau spokesman said today flood warnings for the Don River
had been withdrawn temporarily this morning, but the situation was being closely monitored.
"There may be a recurrence of flooding in the Don, but we are monitoring that, it depends
if rain falls in the catchment or not," the spokesman said.
There's has been minor flooding of the Thomson and Ellis rivers.
"There's still going to be some heavy falls up around the Townsville area and inland
from there today, and in the Gulf country there is further moderate to heavy falls in
that northern part of Queensland," the spokesman said.
Rain is also expected in the Cairns and Innisfail areas early next week, where residents
and relief workers are rebuilding communities devastated by Cyclone Larry two weeks ago.
A spokeswoman for the State Emergency Service said crews were standing by in case floodwaters
returned.
