NSW: Weight limit increase for posties
SYDNEY, Feb 19 AAP - Amid battles to attract and retain staff, Australia Post has boosted
the maximum weight allowance for posties by 15kg.
Two years ago Australia Post said its 110cc motorcycles had "a safe working limit"
of 130kg, allowing about 40kg for letters, meaning posties could weigh up to 90kg.
But posties are now allowed a fully-clothed weight of 105kg.
Australia Post say the motorcycle manufacturer, Honda, approved the weight change last
year, News Limited newspapers report.
NSW Communications Electrical Plumbing Union (CEPU) branch organiser Michael Etue said
the 90 kg-limit had caused recruitment headaches at Australia Post.
"How many people weigh 90kg? Not many," Mr Etue told News Ltd.
"They lifted the weight limit to 105kg after Honda gave them permission but they didn't
consult with us."
Unions claim the increased weight allowance means posties cannot carry as much mail
and will have to work overtime to meet unrealistic deadlines.
The weight limit change was noticed on the latest Australia Post application form.
